Our school

Moreton Downs State School, Deception Bay, QLD

Context
Moreton Downs State School is just 21 years old and situated 30 kilometres to the North of Brisbane in the suburb of Deception Bay. The school has a growing reputation across a district which has substantial new housing developments in the vicinity. 
The School Motto of: Growth Through Knowledge aims to foster a culture framed by high expectations. The school’s coeducational enrolment is approximately 660 students from Prep to Year 6. 
Quality programs are offered to students in all Key Learning Areas while delivering the Australian Curriculum. Key focus areas articulated in the school’s Explicit Improvement Agenda are in the areas of Reading, Writing, Numeracy, Upper 2 Bands and Attendance. The distinct focus on Literacy and Numeracy is achieved by adapting and refining Queensland's Curriculum into the Classroom (C2C) units, to meet the differentiated needs of students.
Moreton Downs State School has a philosophy of inclusion which provides the individual care and attention required so that children may achieve at their own level. Recent years has seen a revitalisation of the school’s support program (The HIVE), which plays a central role in meeting student’s needs.
Significant emphasis is placed on providing a learning environment where all students feel safe and supported. The school promotes a ‘growth mindset’ for students through the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) approach. This school-wide approach explicitly and purposefully promotes three expectations (bees):  be Respectful, be Safe and be a Learner.
The school takes great pride in maintaining a strong sense of family through its’ commitment to shared ownership of student outcomes and developing parent skills.
An explicit Collegial Engagement Framework maintains a clear focus on excellence in the school. The pedagogical direction is articulated by Marzano’s Art and Science of TeachingR framework. Extensive curricula and extra-curricular opportunities exist, particularly in the areas of Sport, Health, Instrumental Music, Digital Technology and The Arts. The school has regular success in sporting, choir, robotics and instrumental competitions and challenges. Recent extension activities have focussed on student leadership, coding/robotics, extension and guided reading across the school. The capacity of the school to offer such diverse and inclusive offerings comes from the passion and commitment of the staff.  Staff go 'above and beyond' to ensure all students are provided an opportunity to enrich their education.
Student attendance has improved over recent years and reflects a growth in respect afforded the school and an increasing value for education in the community.
The community supports the school with a growing band of parents assisting in fundraising and Parents and Citizens Association operations. This is guided by a small but dedicated group of parents. The biannual Twilight Carnival is a strong community focus. The P&C has been instrumental in ensuring in 2018 that all classrooms are air-conditioned.
The school works in numerous networks and clusters across the district, state and Redcliffe Peninsula. These all serve to strengthen the school’s capacity to deliver in many areas from curriculum to sport.
